Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson faces 30 felony charges including malfeasance in office and obstruction of justice after a special grand jury investigation into last year’s jailbreak that saw 10 dangerous inmates escape through a hole hidden behind a toilet.
The Daring Escape and Cover-Up
Ten inmates broke free from Orleans Parish Correctional Facility last May, including murderers and other violent offenders. Surveillance footage captured the prisoners tearing open a door before fleeing through a wall breach created when someone removed bolts from the exterior. Investigators discovered the escape route concealed behind a toilet, raising immediate questions about who had access to the outside of the facility before the breakout occurred.
Multiple Officials Charged
Sheriff Hutson and Chief Financial Officer Bianka Brown both face serious criminal charges. Brown received 20 felony counts including malfeasance in office, filing false public records, and obstruction of justice. Law enforcement eventually recaptured all ten escapees: Antoine Massey, Lenton Venburen, Leo Tate, Kendell Myles, Derrick Groves, Jermaine Donald, Corey Boyd, Gary Price, Robert Moody, Dkenan Dennis, and Keith Lewis. Authorities also arrested 13 additional people for helping the inmates both during and after the escape.
What This Means
The indictments suggest the grand jury found evidence that top correctional officials actively interfered with the investigation or falsified records related to the security failure. The charges against both the sheriff and the financial officer point to potential systemic corruption rather than simple negligence. The case raises serious concerns about oversight and accountability at one of Louisiana’s largest detention facilities, particularly given the violent criminal histories of the escapees.
