A Trump-backed right-wing outsider just stunned Colombia’s political left — and the outgoing socialist president is crying fraud with almost no evidence to back it up.
Story Snapshot
- Abelardo “El Tigre” de la Espriella won Colombia’s June 21 presidential runoff with about 49.7% of the vote to leftist Iván Cepeda’s 48.7%, a gap of roughly 250,000 votes.
- President Trump endorsed de la Espriella before the vote, saying “He has all my support,” and supporters celebrated in the streets of Bogotá and Barranquilla.
- Outgoing socialist President Gustavo Petro refused to accept the preliminary results, claiming software fraud — but his own ally Cepeda later found no evidence of irregularities.
- International observers from the European Union called the count “transparent, orderly, and fluid,” and Colombia’s own election authority dismissed Petro’s fraud claims.
Trump-Backed “El Tigre” Wins Colombia’s Presidency
Abelardo de la Espriella — a combative criminal lawyer who calls himself “El Tigre,” meaning “The Tiger” — won Colombia’s presidential runoff on June 21, 2026. With more than 99% of ballots counted, he led with 49.7% to leftist Senator Iván Cepeda’s 48.7%. The margin was about 250,000 votes out of more than 26 million cast. Supporters cheered in Bogotá and Barranquilla as de la Espriella declared, “Colombia, here is your president!”[4]
The win capped a strong run for de la Espriella. He had already led the first round on May 31 with 43.7% of the vote, beating Cepeda’s 40.9% by nearly 670,000 votes.[3] Polls before the first round had actually favored Cepeda, making de la Espriella’s performance a major upset. President Trump endorsed him directly, stating, “It is an honor for me to give Abelardo de la Espriella my full and complete endorsement.”[12]
Petro Cries Fraud — His Own Ally Doesn’t Buy It
Outgoing President Gustavo Petro refused to accept the results. He claimed the vote-counting software had been tampered with and said about 800,000 voter records were improperly added to the rolls.[12] Petro also accused election officials of rushing the count to avoid a review of his claims.[10] He declared he would only accept results validated by judicial review commissions.
The fraud claims quickly fell apart. Cepeda’s own campaign reviewed the results and found nothing. “We have found no evidence of facts that merit a statement regarding eventual irregularities,” Cepeda said, walking back his earlier concerns.[12] Colombia’s National Registry stated the final count matched the preliminary tally at 99.94% accuracy, dismissing claims of widespread manipulation.[10] The European Union’s Electoral Observation Mission called the count “transparent, orderly, and fluid,” and flatly rejected Petro’s allegations.[15]
Colombia Swings Right — What It Means
De la Espriella’s win signals a sharp turn away from Petro’s left-wing agenda. Colombia’s voters chose a hard-right outsider who defied polls and the political establishment. The race drew record interest — the first round saw the highest presidential election turnout in Colombia’s history, with nearly 24 million voters participating.[20] The two finalists together captured 84.6% of all valid votes, showing how deeply polarized the country had become.[20]

The result fits a broader pattern across Latin America, where voters frustrated with socialist policies have pushed back at the ballot box. Historically, Colombia’s preliminary vote counts have closely tracked final certified results.[2] Petro’s fraud narrative lost steam fast — even his own side couldn’t find proof. The official manual verification was still underway at the time of reporting, but the margin of roughly 250,000 votes makes a reversal highly unlikely.[1] For conservatives watching the global push against the left, Colombia’s election is another clear signal that voters want change.
