Notwithstanding Anthony Fauci’s long-standing conviction that coronavirus had a natural origin, he claims he is maintaining an “open mind” about allegations the pathogen may have spilled from a Chinese facility.
Why Only Now?
On July 23, Fauci said to Fox News that he’s going to keep an open mind about the lab leak theory. However, he also expressed that just because more people are speaking about this theory, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s accurate.
During the question and answer session, the chief medical advisor to President Biden was challenged about emails he sent two years prior in which he claimed that the lab leak theory would eventually be disproven.
Fauci said this despite evidence and inner expert judgment trying to point in the opposite direction, that the virus originated in a lab and not an animal.
It happened at a time when coronavirus is widely thought to have initially developed in the P4 lab at the Wuhan Center of Virology, a bio-safety facility in the Chinese city of Wuhan.

Fox News host Bret Baier said “one has to look pretty hard to find some elements that [perhaps] appear contrived.”
Fauci said, “Bret, I know you’re a respectable guy, I’ve known you a lengthy time.”
“You can take a bunch of emails from individuals who are contemplating and considering aloud and stop there, not taking into understanding the weeks of thought by the same people who wrote the letters.”
“They provide justification for their belief that it was a natural event in the peer-reviewed existing literature.”
Controversies
Nevertheless, it appears from the emails, which House Republicans made public in January of last year, that Fauci and a few other eminent scientists wished to advance the biological origin explanation.
According to records made available through a Freedom of Information Act request, Andersen, a research scientist at California’s Scripps Research Center, addressed Fauci in January 2020 about the potential for the virus to be genetically modified.
He said to Fauci, “One has to look extremely attentively at all the sequencing to realize that some of the characteristics [possibly] appear designed. The odd properties of the viruses make up a fairly small fraction [0.1 percent] of the genome.”

Weeks later, Andersen allegedly secured funding from the National Institutes of Health for research that said the disease has a natural origin.
In a May 2020 interview with National Geographic, Fauci rejected the lab leak scenario, stating the data “clearly implies” a natural origin.
A year later, he changed his mind and said he was “not confident” the virus arose spontaneously.
If Republicans win control of Congress in November’s midterms, they have threatened to look into Fauci’s alleged role to quash stories about the virus potentially leaking from the Wuhan facility.
